Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in building materials such as insulation, roofing, and flooring due to its excellent heat resistance and durability. However, when disturbed or damaged, asbestos fibers become airborne, and when inhaled, these tiny fibers can attach to the lungs and cause long-term damage or even death through diseases such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

There are six types of asbestos, namely chrysotile, amosite, crocidolite, tremolite, anthophyllite, and actinolite. Although chrysotile is the most commonly used type, they are all harmful and need to be handled with care.

The removal of asbestos is necessary to eliminate the risks associated with exposure to airborne fibers. Under the Regulation 4 of the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, only licensed asbestos removal contractors are authorized to remove higher-risk asbestos-containing materials (ACMs), including sprayed coatings, pipe insulation, and asbestos insulation boards. Meanwhile, non-licensed contractors may remove lower-risk ACMs such as asbestos cement products, provided they follow the right procedures.
