Asbestos is a naturally occurring fibrous mineral that was commonly used in construction materials up until the 1980s. Due to its fire-resistant and insulating properties, it was commonly used in insulation, roofing, floor tiles, and other building materials.

Despite its usefulness, asbestos is extremely hazardous to human health. Asbestos fibers can easily become airborne when materials containing them are disturbed, such as during construction or renovation work. When inhaled, these tiny fibers can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.
