Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in the UK construction industry before it was banned in 1999. Asbestos was popular due to its durability, fire resistance, and insulation properties. However, asbestos fibres are microscopic and pose a significant health risk when they become airborne and are inhaled into the lungs.

Asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) were commonly used in construction materials such as floor tiles, ceiling tiles, insulation, and roofing materials. If ACMs are disturbed, they release asbestos fibres, which can be inhaled by anyone nearby. Over time, persistent exposure to asbestos can cause serious health problems such as lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.
