Asbestos was once a popular construction material due to its heat-resistant and sturdy nature. However, it was later discovered that asbestos is a highly toxic mineral that poses serious risks to human health. Over time, asbestos fibres can get airborne, making them easy to inhale. Once inhaled, these fibres can cause a range of fatal lung illnesses, such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma, which can take up to 50 years or more to develop.

In May 2021, the UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) warned contractors and homeowners that there is an increased risk of asbestos exposure when conducting home renovations, DIY projects, or demolitions. This is because many older homes, buildings, and structures in South Bowood and other parts of the UK contain asbestos in various forms, including insulation, flooring, roof sheets, cement pipes, and more.
