Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was commonly used in a variety of building materials until the mid-1980s. The mineral fibers are strong, durable and heat-resistant, making it ideal for use in construction. Asbestos was used in a variety of products including insulation, ceiling tiles, flooring, roofing, and even in some paints and coatings.

Unfortunately, asbestos is also known to be dangerous to human health. When asbestos is disturbed, it releases tiny fibers into the air that can be inhaled, causing lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma. These diseases can take years to develop, and there is currently no cure for asbestos-related illnesses.
