Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in construction, insulation, roofing, and other building materials until it was banned in many countries. Asbestos fibers are strong, flexible, heat-resistant, and fire-retardant, which made them ideal for many industrial and commercial applications. However, when asbestos fibers are released into the air and inhaled, they can get lodged in the lungs and other organs, causing serious health problems.

There are six types of asbestos minerals, but only three were widely used in building materials:

• Chrysotile (serpentine asbestos), which is the most common type of asbestos and accounts for about 95% of all asbestos used in the US. It is usually found in ceiling and floor tiles, insulation, and joint compounds.
• Amosite (brown asbestos), which is less common than chrysotile but more commonly found in insulating boards, asbestos cement, and pipe insulation.
• Crocidolite (blue asbestos), which is the most hazardous type of asbestos and rarely used in the US. It is found in some insulation materials and cement products.

Asbestos was also used in many other products, such as brake linings, gaskets, textiles, and even household appliances. Therefore, it is essential to have a professional asbestos inspection if you suspect you have ACMs in your home or workplace.
