Management Surveys are designed to locate, as far as is reasonably practicable, the presence and extent of any suspect ACMs in a building or structure that may be disturbed during normal occupancy, maintenance, or foreseeable maintenance activity. It involves a visual inspection of the building and materials, and may also involve taking samples of suspected asbestos-containing materials for testing.

Refurbishment/Demolition Surveys (RD) are required when the building (or part of the building) needs upgrading, refurbishment, or demolition, and are essential for identifying any ACMs that may be present. Refurbishment and demolition surveys are intrusive and involve the sampling of suspect materials to confirm the presence of ACMs. These samples are then analyzed in a UKAS-accredited laboratory.
