Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that has been used for centuries due to its strength, durability, and heat resistance. Asbestos was commonly used in building materials until the 1980s, when it was discovered that the inhalation of asbestos fibers could lead to serious health problems, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

In response, legislation was introduced that required asbestos to be identified and safely removed from buildings. This legislation includes the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, which requires that all non-domestic buildings be surveyed for asbestos.

Asbestos can be found in a wide range of building materials, including insulation, ceiling tiles, floor tiles, roofing and guttering, and even in some paints and adhesives. It is therefore essential that an asbestos survey is conducted prior to any refurbishment or demolition work.
