An asbestos survey is essential to determine if asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) are present within a building. The survey confirms the presence of asbestos, the amount, and the level of risk. The survey must be carried out by a qualified and accredited asbestos surveyor. An asbestos survey will advise on the type of asbestos present, and whether its in good condition or needs to be removed.

Asbestos surveys are split into two main categories: management surveys and refurbishment/demolition surveys. A management survey is undertaken to identify the presence, condition, and extent of asbestos within a building that is likely to be disturbed during normal occupancy. On the other hand, a refurbishment/demolition survey is more intrusive and aims to identify all ACMs before any renovation or demolition work commences.
