An asbestos survey is a comprehensive inspection of a building or structure to identify any materials that contain asbestos. The survey aims to locate and assess the condition of ACMs and produce a detailed report that includes recommendations for managing or removing them.

There are two types of asbestos surveys: management surveys and refurbishment/demolition surveys. The type of survey required depends on the nature of the building and the project at hand.

• Management Surveys: These surveys are conducted to identify the presence, location, and condition of any ACMs that may be disturbed during normal occupancy or maintenance of a building. Such non-destructive surveys would be sufficient to manage asbestos-containing materials.

• Refurbishment/Demolition Surveys: These surveys are conducted prior to any refurbishment or demolition work to identify any ACMs that may be disturbed during the work. A refurbishment or demolition survey is intrusive, and samples of suspected ACMs are taken as part of the inspection process.
