An asbestos survey is a comprehensive inspection of a building to determine the presence and location of any asbestos-containing materials (ACMs). Asbestos surveys are required by law under the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, and failure to comply with the regulations can result in prosecution and heavy fines.

There are two main types of asbestos surveys:

• Management Surveys: These are standard surveys conducted to locate and assess the condition of any ACMs that may be disturbed during normal occupancy or maintenance activities. This type of survey is required for all non-domestic buildings, including commercial, industrial, and public sector properties.

• Refurbishment and Demolition (R&D) Surveys: These are more extensive surveys carried out prior to refurbishment or demolition works on a building. R&D surveys are designed to locate and assess all ACMs within the building, including those that may not be easily accessible.
