However, we now know that prolonged exposure to asbestos can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer and mesothelioma. Asbestos fibres are easily inhaled and can become lodged in the lungs, leading to scarring and inflammation over time.

It is estimated that asbestos-related illnesses currently cause around 5,000 deaths per year in the UK, making it a serious public health concern.
