Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was commonly used in building materials until the 1980s. It was valued for its heat resistance, sound absorption, and strength. However, it was later discovered that asbestos fibers can become airborne during demolition, renovation, or maintenance activities, and when inhaled, can lead to serious health issues such as asbestosis, lung cancer, and mesothelioma.

Because of its dangerous properties, the use of asbestos has been banned in the UK since 1999. However, many buildings constructed before the 1980s may still contain asbestos materials. Asbestos is often found in insulation, ceiling tiles, flooring, roofing, boiler and pipe insulation, and cement products.
