Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was used extensively in construction materials such as insulation, flooring, roofing products, and pipes due to its excellent resistance to heat, fire, and chemicals. However, asbestos has since been linked with several health risks and diseases, including lung cancer and mesothelioma.

The use of asbestos-containing materials (ACMs) was widespread in buildings constructed before the turn of the century. If left undisturbed, asbestos can be relatively safe. If disturbed, it can cause harmful dust and fibres to be released into the air, which, when inhaled, can cause severe health problems.
