Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in building materials, including insulation, pipe and ductwork insulation, roofing, flooring, and ceiling tiles. It was popular due to its strength, durability, and fire-resistant properties.

However, the use of asbestos has been banned in the UK since 1999, due to its potential danger to health. When asbestos materials are damaged or disturbed, they produce microscopic asbestos fibres that can be breathed in and cause serious health problems, including lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis.

According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), asbestos is present in a large number of UK properties, particularly those built prior to 2000. It is estimated that around 5,000 people in the UK die every year due to asbestos-related diseases, making it a significant public health issue.
