Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that was widely used in construction materials between the 1950s and 1980s. It was popular in the UK due to its heat-resistant properties, durability, insulating capabilities and resistance to chemicals. However, it was discovered that asbestos can cause serious health problems, including lung cancer, asbestosis and mesothelioma.

Because of the dangers posed by asbestos, the UK government banned its use in all construction materials in 1999, but there are still many older buildings that contain asbestos.
